Richard Eric Malmstrom was installed August 13 as the pastor serving Trinity Lutheran Church in Santa Paula and Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Ojai, replacing former pastor Rick Swanson who will now be serving First Lutheran in Camarillo. R. Eric Malmstrom was born on January 1, 1967 in Mountain View, California, and was raised in San Jose. After high school he later graduated from Concordia University, Irvine.In 1987 he entered the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Haddock (SSN 621). He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1993.He entered Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and graduated this spring with his Master of Divinity degree. For his vicarage year, a required year of training out in the field, he served with the chaplain at Lutheran Homes, Inc. in Fort Wayne. In April of this year he received the seminary assignment to serve as pastor of Trinity Lutheran in Santa Paula and Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Ojai. He was ordained into the holy ministry at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne on July 9.
Pastor Malmstrom and his wife Leslie were married June 6, 1989 in Irvine. They have twin sons, Thomas Richard and Timothy Eric, who were born July 9, 1999. Besides caring for his family and the churches he is beginning to serve, this sixth generation pastor enjoys woodworking and fishing.
