A teenager who accepted a ride to Santa Paula from her cousin found herself the victim of sexual abuse that ended when she escaped and the cousin engaged in a high speed chase that ended in a crash and his arrest.
The alleged kidnapping and attempted rape occurred on Monday, Aug. 14 starting at approximately 12:45 p.m., according to Ventura County Sheriff’s Detective Scott Peterson. The victim, a 15-year-old girl, accompanied her cousin, 21-year-old Darwin Lucas Fuller, to Santa Paula, but during the ride he drove to an orchard and sexually assaulted the victim by touching her body parts and trying to kiss her. Between Upper Ojai and Santa Paula Darwin pulled off Highway 150 several times to assault the victim, who at one point attempted to escape and was held against her will by Fuller who drove to another location and continued the assault.Fuller at one point attempted to rape the victim but she was able to fight him off and at one point managed to flee from the car; Fuller found her a short time later and “scared her into getting back in the car with him,” said Det. Peterson.Fuller drove the victim to the Sulphur Mountain Road area where he forced her to touch his private parts. Finally, shortly after 6 p.m., the victim managed to again escape and flagged down two passersby traveling on Sulphur Mountain Road who took her to a nearby home - the victim was a friend of the resident - where she called police.
VCSD patrol units were dispatched to the scene and soon located Fuller driving southbound on Highway 150 and a brief chase ensued when the officers made a U-turn and attempted to stop Fuller. Fuller speeded up and lost control of his vehicle and crashed on the side of the highway.Fuller had no injuries and refused medical attention and was then booked at the Ventura County Jail; he was charged with kidnapping, attempted rape and other charges.
