Charlotte “Cha” Elizabeth Stanley
Our precious Mother, Charlotte Elizabeth Stanley, passed away peacefully at home in Los Osos, CA surrounded by her children on Sunday, October 7, 2007.She was born in New York, NY on February 15, 1916 to Charlotte Elizabeth (Proffen) and William Saile Lehrbach. She lost her mother at the age of 7 years, and grew up in Mount Vernon, NY with her stepmother, adored father, two older brothers and two younger sisters. She met her beloved husband of 60 years in the 5th grade, and graduated with him from high school in 1934 during the depth of the Depression.Charlotte graduated from the Cochran School of Nursing in New Rochelle, NY as a registered nurse in 1940. She worked as a visiting nurse until marrying her childhood sweetheart, Gregory “Cal” Quin Stanley on August 5, 1942.Shortly thereafter, Dad left for duty in World War II as an Army Air Corps bomber pilot, and from that time until his retirement Mom worked at her career as a U.S. Air Force wife. With frequent moves to a dozen different locations in the U.S. and overseas (including England and Japan), Mom supervised all the packing and travel arrangements, set up each new household, raised the family, and still found time to work in various military community service positions. At each base, Mom served in many capacities in the Officer’s Wives Club, worked as a volunteer nurse, and was a Girl Scout troop leader for her daughters for several years. After 27 years in the Air Force, Mom and Dad retired and settled in Santa Paula, where Mom was very involved with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, participated regularly in bowling leagues for 25 years, and was active with the Retired Officer’s Wives Club at Port Hueneme. Always a wonderful hostess, Mom loved to entertain, travel the world, visited the sick and elderly, and made beautiful handcrafted afghans, clothes, and detailed tatted items. She was a most loving, caring and devoted mother with a great sense of humor, a love of words, and a positive attitude and approach to life. She was a strong, amazing woman, always kind and gracious, and, truly, to know her was to love her.
Charlotte and Cal moved to Napa, CA in June 2002, and after Dad died in February 2003, Mom moved to Los Osos in November 2004.She is survived by her children, Ellen J. (Stanley) McClure of Napa, Elaine J. Stanley of Oakland, Gwen L. (Stanley) Green of Los Osos, and Gregory D. Stanley of Vancouver, WA, as well as four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.The Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 23 at St. Benedict’s Episcopal Church, 2220 Snowy Egret Lane, Los Osos, CA 93402, with a reception to follow.
