By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesSancho’s Bar was the scene of several disturbances over the past weekend that led to arrests on charges ranging from obstructing police officers and violation of probation and parole terms to driving under the influence.According to Santa Paula Police Lieutenant Troyce Reynolds, regular bar checks conducted at Sancho’s - located in the 100 block of West Harvard Boulevard - led to the arrests early Friday at about 1 a.m. of two known gang members for obstructing officers and violation of probation and parole terms. Arrested were Efren Elizalde, 26, of Santa Paula, and Robert Loza, 28, also of Santa Paula. On Saturday at about 1:30 a.m. a “large bar fight” involving an unknown number of participants was reported. “All of our officers, seven were working that night, responded” and “it quickly broke up as they were getting there, and within a few minutes of their arrival” the fight was over. A battery report was generated as a result of the fight.
SPPD officers stayed in the immediate area “stopping cars,” which resulted in one arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. In July, Sancho’s was the scene of a large fight - police estimated at the time that about 300 people were inside the bar, well over capacity - that required a call for California Highway Patrol and Ventura County Sheriff’s Department backup when the crowd became unruly after the SPPD arrested a bar patron. The July brawl lasted more than 20 minutes before the crowd was cleared. The next early morning, during a SPPD bar check, two women started to fight, resulting in one woman receiving a facial wound, but she refused medical treatment. Both women were cited for fighting in public.Sancho’s, according to the SPPD, has become the scene of a rising number of incidents requiring a police response.
