The Santa Paula Boys Basketball Club “Red Storm” was the host to basketball players from Grades 6, 7 and 8 this past weekend.Joey Ramirez, former Basketball player at SPUHS, Ventura College, Pepperdine and UC Riverside is currently coaching the recently established “Red Storm” 7th and 8th grade teams. Mike Mitchell, former all CIF guard out of SPUHS in the early eighties is the coach for the 6th grade team. Richard Noriega, the manager for this new basketball club (according to his parents) is the ‘storm’ that moves the club. The tournament started on Friday night when the 6th and 8th graders set the pace for what turned out to be some serious competition. Local teams that participated were the Oxnard “Rebels”, Carpinteria, Goleta, Conejo, Santa Barbara “Blazers”, Santa Maria “Swoosh”, Oxnard “Aztecs” Santa Barbara “805” and the Santa Paula “Red Storm”.Games were intense and the players gave it all they had on Friday and Saturday to qualify for the championship games on Sunday. In the 6th grade division the championship was earned by Conejo who were undefeated, with second place going to Carpinteria with the “Red Storm” winning the third place game over Santa Barbara. In the 7th grade semifinal game the “Red Storm” was turned away with a heartbreaking loss to the Oxnard “Rebels” placing third by defeating Goleta. In the championship game the Santa Maria “Swoosh” gave the Oxnard “Rebels” a fight for the championship, but with a tie score and 2 seconds left on the clock, the “Swoosh” fouled a player. The “Rebel” sank one out of two and were up by one point. With 1 second on the clock, the ball was thrown across the court in a last effort, but the “Swoosh” would have to be content with second place.
In the 8th grade division the Oxnard “Rebels” proved they were in the house all weekend going undefeated until they met the Santa Barbara “805” who defeated them for the championship. Conejo placed third by beating the Santa Paula “Red Storm”.Among the all tournament players were George Magdaleno (7th grade) & Robert Lascano (6th grade) from the “Red Storm.”The “Red Storm” wishes to thank all of the parents, referees and community members who supported this tournament. The “Red Storm” is reaching out to other youths and to community members who would like to help this new organization moving. The goal of Coach Ramirez is to provide a valuable experience that will benefit these boys or girls in the future. If you would like more information on joining or contributing to the club, call Richard Noriega at 525-1614.
