A popular Mexican eatery took a 360-degree turn and became a bright mauve-pink candy shop for the recent filming of an automobile commercial. Hugo and Vickie Rivas, the owners of La Casita, located at 106 W. Main St., allowed the film production company to turn the eatery into an eye-catching roadside stand, the perfect place for the Chevrolet compact car featured in the commercial to make a sweet tooth stop.
The transformation of the restaurant with the outdoor dining patio certainly was one that would cause people to hit the brakes: “I heard a few people called City Hall and asked what happened to La Casita,” Patti Harrison, who handles filming in Santa Paula, said with a laugh.
La Casita was painted in a shade that could be described as Pepto Bismol pink, a perfect contrast to the bright blue Chevrolet used in the commercial. A large and long balloon resembling a stick of wrapped taffy floated above the building, adjacent to the dining patio.
Harrison said, “The premise is somebody is out on a getaway, just driving around and having fun behind of the wheel of the Chevrolet, traveling on back roads and through fields.... The salt water taffy shop is just a roadside stand they stop at.”
It was only a one-day shoot that Harrison said included returning the salt water taffy shop to its roots: “They turned around the same day they shot the commercial and repainted the building,” the bright mauve-pink disappearing - thank goodness! - and La Casita returned to its usual business.
