Brenda Sue Baker Escoto

Brenda S. Escoto, 73, of Santa Paula, passed away after a lengthy illness on April 9, 2013.

Brenda came into this world on a snowy day, January 10, 1940 in Walter, Alabama. She grew up in Alabama and graduated from Etowah High School in 1958 in Attalla, Alabama. She then pursued a career in Nursing and graduated from the University of Alabama Hospital School of Nursing at Birmingham in 1961. After graduation, she was offered a teaching position in the school of nursing but declined it to “see the world”. She then went to work for the Red Cross and traveled all over the country. In 1962 she joined the Air Force Reserves, where she trained as a flight nurse and achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

While stationed at Norton AFB in San Bernardino, she met someone who would change her life, her future husband, Ted. They met and married in 1965 and settled in Santa Paula. She was one of the first “Super Moms” raising a family and having a successful career in nursing that spanned over 50 years. She worked in many areas of nursing but by far her favorite area was gerontological and her love of her older patients. When not working she could be found volunteering with the PTA and Friends of Santa Paula High School when her children, Susie and Patrick, were in school. She was a lifelong member of St. Sebastian’s Church. In her later years, she was involved with the Blanchard Community Library. She was a devoted wife and mother but her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren, Sean and Caroline, whom she took care of and helped raise. Her southern roots ran deep even after living in California for 45 years, she could be found every Saturday in the fall watching Alabama Football cheering on the Crimson Tide, her alma mater. She was in many ways like her team disciplined, hard working, and a winner in life! Roll Tide Roll!

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Ted; children, daughter, Susan Escoto-Lloyd, her husband, John of Santa Paula, son, Patrick, and his fiancée, Seila Arnold of Olathe, Colorado. Her grandchildren, Sean and Caroline Lloyd; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Adolfo and Olivia Escoto of Santa Paula, Roman and Julie Escoto of Long Beach, Charlie and Irene Garcia of Thousand Oaks, Albert and Patricia Escoto of Long Beach. Cousins, Rebeccah Petersen of West Hills, Richard Albritton of Miami, Sarah Jane Albritton of Dallas. Many nephews and nieces including Marie Gift of Federal Way, WA , James Easterwood of Modesto, Glenda Burrows of Modesto, Marilla Tubbs of Modesto, also survive her.
