A large number of teachers, students and grateful community members were in attendance at Santa Paula High School last Friday for the dedication of the music room in honor of Ed Roina, long time SPHS music instructor.
Among those in attendance at the naming of the Ed Roina Music Hall were School Board members Al Sandoval and Shirley Hendren, instructor Ed Arguelles, Superintendent Dr. William Brand, Principal J. Antonio Gaitan, and Michelle Kolbeck, Santa Paula Elementary School District Board member.Principal Gaitan indicated that “Ed Roina has been the pillar and inspiration to our young musicians at Santa Paula High. His commitment and dedication to music is reflected by the talent he has produced.”Michelle Kolbeck presented Roina with a certificate of appreciation. “If there is a function in this town, that’s where you are going to find Mr. Roina,” she said. “He is Mr. Community, and he instills in these kids a sense of community.”
Roina’s teaching career has spanned many years - a career that includes two attempts at retirement. Currently he is teaching only one band period daily, but this does not include the many “extracurricular” community events where band members perform.Ed Arguelles, a former student of Roina’s whose son also played at SPHS, unveiled the portrait which will hang in the music room. “It’s very well-deserved that this hall is named after Mr. Roina,” said Arguelles. “I think for years to come... it will be thought of as Mr. Roina’s opus.”
