Amnesia takes Shelby Daniel to county bee

Shelby Daniel's memory did not fail her when asked to spell ``amnesia'' for the championship word during Area 5 Spelling Bee competition held at Blanchard Elementary School on Tuesday. Seventeen rounds it took before Daniel, a Mupu Elementary School sixth grader, emerged the winner for the second consecutive year. Daniel is the daughter of Jeff and Lisa Darling-Daniel. Also advancing is runner-up from St. Sebastian School, April Kizer. Kizer and alternate Nick Collins, Santa Paula Elementary School District Home School student, tossed the runner-up spot back and forth until Collins misspelled ``culinary'', and Kizer correctly spelled ``accountant''.Tuesday's winner will join other winners from schools throughout the county at the countywide spelling bee at 6:30 p.m., March 22 at the Camarillo Boys & Girls Club. The winner of that bee will go on to compete at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.Sheryl Misenhimer, Isbell Middle School principal, pronounced the words. Judges were Patti Fulbright, McKevett Elementary principal, and Glenn Deines, special projects coordinator for the Santa Paula Elementary School District.
The 15 participants in the Area 5 spelling bee were winners from each individual school site in Santa Paula, and Fillmore.
