By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesSanta Paula Police arrested an area man on a variety of charges after he attacked his brother-in-law and hit an officer in the lip while kicking out a the window of a patrol car, according to a SPPD official. Acting Chief Mark Hanson said that officers responded on Thursday, November 10 to the 1000 block of Cadway Street at about 6 p.m., after a 911 emergency call of a family dispute.Upon arrival, officers were told by 38-year-old Shawn Smith of Santa Paula that Frank Zakrajshek, 42, “had been released earlier in the day from state prison” and his wife had taken him to his mother’s because she suspected he had been drinking, said Chief Hanson. “Smith said he been talking to Zakrajshek outside about needing to stay out of trouble when Zakrajshek attempted to strike Smith, then grabbed a plastic milk crate and swung it… the blow caused a laceration to Smith’s left arm” and Zakrajshek fled up the hillside. An ambulance had already been dispatched to the scene to respond for an ailing family member who became ill during the altercation.
“Officers checked the hillside area and found Zakrajshek hiding in the bushes,” said Chief Hanson. When Zakrajshek “wouldn’t follow the directions of the officer, he was pepper-sprayed, pulled out of the bush, handcuffed and escorted back to the house,” where he started making verbal threats against family members and officers.Zakrajshek was placed in the patrol car while his relative was treated, and then taken out for paramedics to wash the pepper-spray from his face. “When he would not cooperate with that, he was put back in the patrol car” and started kicking out the rear side window, striking SPPD Officer Ryan Smith in the lip. “He continued to make threats of violence against everybody at the scene, including the officers.”Officer Smith and Officer Wally Boggess got Zakrajshek under control and transported him to Ventura County Medical Center to be treated for the pepper-spray. “At VCMC, it took our two officers and two others” from the Oxnard and Simi Valley police departments, who were also at the hospital, “to help restrain Zakrajshek, who was still combative. When he was found fit for confinement, they shackled Zakrajshek and took him to Ventura County Jail, where he had to be subdued again.”Chief Hanson said Zakrajshek was booked for assaulting Smith and assaulting an officer, making criminal threats of violence against the officer, vandalism, felony vandalism and resisting arrest. “Zakrajshek was also put on a parole hold for violating the conditions of his parole,” said Chief Hanson.
