Audrey M. Divine
Audrey M. Divine passed away peacefully on November 25, 2005. She was born January 17, 1910 to Charles A. Douglas and Oka E. Wright Douglas in Terre Haute, Indiana.Audrey married John M. Divine on October 19, 1933. John died September 15, 1982.Audrey graduated from Garfield High School and Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. She taught high school in Epson, Pittsboro, and Greenwood, Indiana.Audrey and John M. Divine moved to Ventura when John as a Seabee left for Port Hueneme, then for overseas service. She was a teacher and assistant principal at Cabrillo Junior High School in Ventura for 26 years. Audrey was a lifetime member of the California Teachers Association, Dean's Association, National Teacher's Association, and the California Parent Teacher's Association.In 1972, Audrey and her husband John moved to Big River, California, where they immediately joined the Parker United Methodist Church. Audrey had grown up in a Methodist church, so she always had the feeling of being back home as a member of the Parker United Methodist Church.During the years, Audrey has served as the president for AARP, Big River Garden Club, Senior Citizen's Club, Parker Community Hospital Auxiliary, B.P.O.DOE'S, and the American Legion 466 Auxiliary, where her husband John served as the Charter Commander. Audrey was also active in Big River's V.F.W. Auxiliary, serving as Chaplain, and in the Parker Woman's Civic Club.There were no natural children born to the union of Audrey and John; Audrey and John had the privilege of acquiring two beautiful foster daughters, which made a closely-knit loving family: Yvonne Medley, married to Judge Tyrone E. Medley of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Maria Rodrigues, the mother of two delightful daughters, Monica Dalto, husband Brian, and Julie Rodrigues, and great grandsons Colby and Zachary Hays, and foster son Jesus (Chuy) Reveles, who have always considered John and Audrey "Papa and Mom." Also close in love and thought are a niece, Isabell Messersmith, and a nephew, Douglas Davison.After 14 years of being alone, Audrey married a long-time family friend, Ben R. Phillips. Audrey and Ben had been completely happy and contented in their marriage and union. Ben died February 4, 2004.Audrey always believed that gifts to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of the donor's choice would be appropriate.Funeral services will be Saturday, December 3, 2005, at 3 p.m. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. The family will be having a private interment.

He was a resident of Santa Paula for 10 years. John enjoyed watching baseball and working in his garden.He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Serrano. John is survived by his children, Edwina Ford, Georgia Manis, John Serrano, Jr., and Rose Chacon; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.Funeral services were held November 29 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial followed the service.Arrangements are under the direction of Funeraria del ángel Stetler Mortuary, 128 S. 8th St., Santa Paula, 525-5595.
