By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesVeterans Memorial Park will be the focus of grooming from a community organization after the City Council approved the request by the Hazel Kay/Dorothy Smead Heritage Valley ARC to provide maintenance under the city’s Adopt-A-Park program. The Council approved the request of the organization serving the developmentally disabled at the April 3 meeting.According to the report by Public Works Director/City Engineer Cliff Finley, “Heritage Valley ARC has requested to adopt” the park, located between 10th and Mill Streets, to conduct weekly cleanups. ARC requested Veterans Memorial Park “because it is within walking distance of their facility on 10th Street,” just north of Main Street.
By taking part in the city’s Adopt-A-Park adoption, ARC clients will make sure that the park is litter free by a weekly cleaning. Finley noted that the city will arrange for trash pickup following the cleanups, and other materials, supplies or services needed by ARC and agreed upon by the city. The Santa Paula Kiwanis Club has adopted Mill Park, and the agreement with ARC is similar, reported Finley.Heritage Valley ARC Program Manager Carol Wood contacted Finley in March, noting that the “staff and clients at our day program have requested to join the Santa Paula Adopt-A-Park program. ARC encourages community involvement, and I feel this is one more opportunity for us to be a part of Santa Paula.”Heritage Valley ARC, operated through the Ventura County ARC which was founded 50 years ago in Santa Paula, is located at 116 N. 10th St., and the facility includes a gift shop with unique items handmade by ARC clients. Heritage Valley ARC also operates a mobile car wash service; ARC programs include job training and independent living, among others.
