Three members of the Mupu 4-H Club spent Sat. Sept 15th at the beach in Ventura. Selena Hurtado, Dylan Byrum and Peter Lopez, along with leader Carole Butler, participated in the Coastal Clean Up at the Oil Piers. Members arrived at 9 a.m. to check in, and enjoy the doughnuts and water available for the workers. Each team was provided with gloves, plastic bags and a check off sheet to tally all the items cleaned off the beach. The Mupu 4-H team collected 6 bags of trash, with cigarette butts easily being the most numerous. Some of the unusual things found on the beach were a trampoline frame, a burned beach towel and a bicycle inner tube. After turning in the trash bags and receiving a Coastal Clean Up t-shirt each, the members proceeded on to their next beach adventure just a few miles down the road. The tide was coming in and workers were busily getting ready to remove the dead whale from the beach near Hobson Park. After more than an hour of steady pressure on the cable, the whale was freed from the beach and towed off to Faria Beach for further study. By this time everyone was hungry so off to Joe’s Crab Shack for lunch and fun on their play structure. Left to right are: Dylan Byrum, Selena Hurtado, Carole Butler, Petey, Peter Lopez.
