She was a 42 year resident of Ventura County.Meme was a very involved member of community activity clubs. She enjoyed her affiliation with various lodges, and most of all her relationship with the Santa Paula Church of the Nazarene.She spent the majority of her working life self-employed. She was the sole proprietor of Cleo’s Grocery Store in old town Ventura. Her expertise in customer service and management led her to Buffalo, Wyoming, where, with the help of her late husband, she built a two-room log cabin motor lodge called the C-Triangle Motel. As a result of the popularity and location, the motel grew to eight rooms in the late 1960s.Thelma is a fifth generation matriarch. She was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister, and a daughter, Verla Rose. She is survived by son Bill G. (Joyce) Randolph of Manteca; daughter Donna Jo (Barry) Coert of Santa Paula; 14 grandchildren, Steve (Martha Worford of Atascadero, Lejean (Ray) Hill of Fillmore, Lynn (Fernand) Coert of Ventura, Gordon Randolph of Manteca, Mike Worford of Torrance, Tim (Pam) Randolph of Fremont, Jeany Getrost of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Susan (Dave) Bagley of Lathrop, David (Ann) Randolph of Fremont, Robin (Jill) Coert of Ventura, Cindy (Martin) Wolters of Ventura, Wayne Randolph of Manteca, Gina Gorrebeeck of Livermore, and Darin (Tracey) Coert of Fillmore; 36 great grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren.Visitation will be from 12 noon until 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 23 at Pierce Brothers Stetler Mortuary Chapel in Santa Paula. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 24 at the Church of the Nazarene, 3452 N. Ojai Rd., Santa Paula. Graveside service to immediately follow.Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Brothers Stetler Mortuary, Santa Paula.PHOTODavid Joseph MarquezDavid Joseph Marquez, age 68, passed into eternity on August 14, 2000 in Santa Paula, his place of birth.David lived his whole life in his beloved glen city, graduating from Santa Paula High School, and conducting his business, Marquez Food Products on North Tenth Street and then on Harvard Boulevard for most of his working life. David’s baker products, Mexican pan, tortillas and tamales were legendary. He always took special pride in his products.David was also a world champion race car driver, having won the U.S. Drag Racing Championships in the “world’s most beautiful dragster,” and later winning the Baja 1000 mile race and the Baja 500 mile race in Baja California.While off-road racing was in its infancy, David turned his attention to the Baja, and with his Baja Bug he placed 18th in his first Baja 500 off-road race. Racing the Baja became a family affair, and as many as 15 crew people would make the trek down for these endurance races. In 1976 he built and drove a two-seater vehicle and won the famous S.C.O.R.E. Baja 500.David’s championships led him to many national honors, but the one he was most proud of was his induction into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. He was a vociferous supporter of the VCSHF thereafter. David retired with over 20 national or track records to his credit. Vehicles he designed and/or built have appeared on the covers of car magazines, and many articles have been written about him, his cars and crews.David was the guiding force behind the annual reunion of the Motor Monarch’s barbecue, where all who had participated in racing were honored. He was a lifetime member of the National Hot Rod Association, the Over 200 Club (drivers who had surpassed the 200 mph mark), the Motor Monarch’s car club, the Gold Coast Roadster and Racing Club, and the Ventura County Sports Hall of fame.David is survived by his wife, Shavie; son Ronald; sisters Virginia Gurrola and Frances Puentes; and many close and personal friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mateo and Jenny Marquez, as well as numerous aunts and uncles.David was a very special person who lived a very special life. All those who knew him will dearly miss him.Services will be conducted by Father Thomas J. Dome at a special mass at St. Sebastian Church, 235 N. 9th St., Santa Paula, on August 25 at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
