By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesShowing pride of those who are serving is the focus of the Armed Forces Banner Recognition Program, but it’s going to be up to the public to let the city know who is currently serving so their dedication can be honored. “The City of Santa Paula wants to show pride in recognizing the brave men and women who are serving our county in the Armed Forces,” and the City Council - led by Mayor Bob Gonzales, who suggested the program - in recent months adopted just such a program, said City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz.“In showing our appreciation and respect, Santa Paula is introducing an Armed Forces Banner Recognition Program. If you know a resident who is currently serving in the military, the City will create a banner in their honor.” The deadline for receiving names for the initial set of banners is Friday, February 29.In order to receive a banner, an application needs to be completed by a family member or friend of those who are serving. Applications are available at City Hall (970 E. Ventura St.) or online at the City website, www.ci.santa-paula.ca.us.
Although the banners - the estimated cost is about $100 each - are free of charge to recognize the service member, the city is accepting donations from sponsors to help fund the program. The banners - which will feature a patriotic background - will be hung along 10th Street, the main entrance into Santa Paula.During the December 17 meeting where the Council adopted the program, Gonzales challenged his peers to match his $300 donation. A public speaker at the meeting, Gerald Kapuscik of Ventura, said he would donate $200 in memory of two noted Polish-American patriots.Sponsor donations to help fund the program can be sent to: City of Santa Paula, Attn: Armed Forces Banner, P.O. Box 569, Santa Paula, CA 93061. For further information, contact the City at 525-4478, ext. 286, or by email at info@ci.santa-paula.ca.us.
