Brian D. Wilson Santa Paula TimesPaul Marietti, who has been interim Principal at Santa Paula High School this year, has been chosen to head the school as Principal.Marietti was an assistant principal at SPHS for two years before taking over from Tony Gaitan, who was on medical leave. District Superintendent, Dr. David Gomez told the board, “He’s had a quick start and he’s done a great job.”Before coming to Santa Paula Marietti was the varsity baseball coach at Burbank High School, besides being a mentor teacher. He’s taught world history and government and he’s also been a special education teacher.Marietti started as a classroom teacher in the L.A. Unified School District in 1992 and spent 14 years teaching and coaching in some L.A.’s highest poverty areas. When he first came to SPHS he was given the task of building a master schedule, which he accomplished, although he had no prior experience in this area. He has built the master schedule every year since.Another area handed to Marietti was to improve the counseling department. He went to work developing procedures to identify the most at need students and created a “for credit” after school program that helped remediate failing students. He also implemented a retention program that held students accountable for earning enough credits to be moved up to the next grade.
In the summers of 2006 and 2007 Marietti designed and led the Santa Paula Summer School program. Working with the ASB, he created a student and staff recognition program to celebrate success. He has also refocused attention on incoming 9th graders, starting a Link Crew class on the campus. Link Crew is a peer counseling program that pairs successful 11th and 12th grade students with incoming 9th graders.Last year, SPHS, a program improvement school, raised its API score from 637 to 671, a 34 point gain in one year and the school met all of its AYP targets for the year, placing the school into a holding pattern on the way out of PI status. In approving Marietti for principal the board noted that Gaitan was a hard act to follow.
