Cardinals beat visiting Villanova Wildcats in Friday game

The Cardinal boys beat Villanova at home Friday, 61-44. The Cards went into Frontier League play with a 6-17 record. They are now 6-2 in league play, second to Fillmore who is 7-1 on the season. There’s a possibility of a three-way tie for first place between Santa Paula, Nordhoff and Fillmore.The Cardinals led by only two points at halftime, 25-23. They came out and outscored the Wildcats by 10 points in the third quarter and coasted to the 17 point win. Ten Cardinals scored during the game.Leading for Santa Paula were: Andrew Jimenez 14, Antonio Rios 12, Andrew Huizar 9, Eduardo Jimenez 7, Anthony Del Rio 6 and Gilbert Mora and Alfredo Cordova each had 4 points.The Cardinals meet up with Grace Brethren in their final home game today (Wednesday). JV plays at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity. The Lancers lost to Nordhoff last week, 73-44.The Santa Paula JV squad also won Friday, beating Villanova 60-51. The Cards scored 27 points in the third quarter. Santa Paula’s top scorers were: Taylor Casas 16, Juan Martinez 15, Juan Reyes 12, Manuel Ortiz 12 and Cesar Correa 5.
The Cardinal freshmen lost their game against visiting Buena High, 52-50.The Bulldogs trailed for the entire game but went ahead with less than a minute left on the clock. The Cards missed a three-point shot at the buzzer.Scoring for the Cardinals were: Cameron Klein 19, Sunny Jackson 10, Miguel Villa 8, Steven Kohr 6, Hayden McClain 5 and Alfredo Rafael 2.
