Cardinals power their way to championship game

The Cardinal varsity baseball team mowed down the competition at the just-completed St. Paul Varsity Tournament, losing finally in the championship round.
The Cards took the first three games beating Warren High 7-5, and then downed LaSalle 7-5. They next took a win from Ontario Christian 4-1. It was the final contest Wednesday that proved to be elusive for Santa Paula, as they lost to Whittier Christian 7-1.Allen Gwynn was the winning pitcher for the Cards in the LaSalle game. Top hitters were: Aaron Gomez, 2-4 with a double and 1 run scored; CJ Castaneda, 2-3 with 2 RBIs and 1 run; Matt Phillips, 2-4 with 1 run and Tony Penuelas, 2-4 with an RBI.Albert Carrillo was on the mound for the Ontario Christian contest. Top hitters were: Aaron Gomez, 1-3 with a home run and 3 RBIs; CJ Castaneda, 1-3 with 1 RBI and Justin Macias, 2-2 with 1 run.Allen Gwynn took the loss in the final game. He now has an impressive 6-1 record. Carrillo and Penuelas were named to the All-Tournament team. Carrillo’s record is now 4-1.
The Cards play a double-header tomorrow at Rio Mesa High School, starting at 11:00 a.m.
