Martha served as a docent at the Santa Paula Oil Museum from the time the doors opened until her recent illness, even while undergoing five years of regular kidney dialysis treatments. She was Santa Paula Citizen of the Year in 1997, and a Woman of History in 2001. She was seen every election day for over 30 years serving as inspector of elections at her local polling place, which for many years was in her living room! She was a tireless volunteer for the Santa Paula Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, managing the gift shop and spending many hours working the register. She was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Santa Paula Memorial Hospital Foundation. For many years Martha greeted clients and their pets while working the front desk at Gil Jackson’s veterinary clinic.Martha devoted countless hours to her children, working as a lunchtime playground supervisor at McKevett School, a room mother, scout leader, high school dance chaperone (even when the music wasn’t to her liking!) and grad night chaperone. She was a favorite of all the kids – hers and everyone else’s.A loyal, loving and loved friend, she was always ready to lend a hand or an ear to anyone who asked for or needed assistance. Playing bridge with her regular groups was a large part of her life, and it will be difficult to replace her at the table. She had many dear friends whose company she and Jim greatly enjoyed during years spent golfing, RVing, playing bridge and just socializing. The family wants to thank the staff of the ICU at Santa Paula Hospital and Assisted Hospice for making her last days comfortable. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the California Oil Museum at 1001 E. Main St., Santa Paula, CA 93060, or to the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Paula, 121 David St., Santa Paula, CA 93060. Interment will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN at the family’s convenience. Arrangements by Skillin-Carroll Mortuary in Santa Paula.
