Santa Paula took the first game 2-0. This one was a pitchers duel. Jose Arizaga (1-0) pitched a complete game with a two-hit shutout. He completely dominated the Filmore bats. “Jose threw very well,” said Head Coach Gerry Sandoval. “He kept Fillmore off balance by moving the ball in and out and changing speeds. He also threw a lot of strikes and didn’t walk a sinle batter.”On the offensive side, Sammy Guzman hit the first pitch out of the ball park. He went 3-4 with two doubles, a home run and one RBI.In game two the story was a six-run rally in the 7th inning for a come-from-behind 7-6 victory. The Cards were down 5-1 heading into that final inning, but Fillmore’s pitchers couldn’t seem to find the strike zone. Robert Juarez started the rally with a single and John Ramirez was then hit by a pitch. Two consecutive walks brought in the first run. Another walk brought in the charity run. Still trailing 5-3, Aaron Segovia was up with one out and the bases loaded. He laced a 3-1 pitch into the right center gap to clear the bases. Anthony Magdaleno followed with a sacrifice fly to score the final and winning run.As for Cardinal pitching, Nathan Perez gave up two earned and three unearned runs in four innings on the mound. Segovia threw two and a third innings of solid relief, getting the win. Arizaga shut the door on Fillmore and earned his first save.

Santa Paula’s varsity had a close pre-season opener with non-league rivals St. Bonaventure, but the game left the Cards short of a win.The Cardinals put up a good fight. Starting pitcher, John Reyes threw four and a third innings and left the game with a 6-3 lead. Freddy Lozano came in and pitched a solid two innings in relief. Santa Paula had a 7-3 lead in the final inning, but the Cardinal pitchers couldn’t find the zone. John Ramirez came in to relieve Lozano. Ramirez walked the tying run and later surrendered the winning hit. Lozano (0-1) took the loss.Offensively, Jose Arizaga went 2-5 with two RBI’s. Reyes had one hit and two RBI’s, and Sammy Guzman got on base four times and scored twice.Santa Paula 2 Fillmore 0Santa Paula 7 Fillmore 6In their next matchup, over the weekend, the Cards swept a pair of games from long-time rivals Fillmore.
