Boys win basketball playoff beating Grace Brethren

A playoff berth that was on the line Wednesday as the Santa Paula varsity defeated Grace Brethren by a score of 57 to 36. 

The Cardinals clinched third place in the Frontier League and a playoff berth on the road in Division 4-A playoffs beginning Wednesday, February 15. The location will be determined this Sunday by the CIF - SS office. 

Santa Paula improved their overall record to 11-13 and their league record to 4-6. The Cards were ahead by a score of 12 to 6 after the first quarter in route to a 21-point victory over Grace Brethren on senior night in front of the largest crowd by far during 2011 - 2012 basketball season. 

Highlights for the Cardinals were Brandon Casas 17 points, Gabriel Diaz 10, Tim Garcia 7, Eduardo Chavez 6, Joshua Garay 5, Eddie Perez 4, Sunny Jackson 3 and Adam Aguilera 2.  Coach Danny Guzman commented that he was “Extremely pleased that the Cards were able secure a win and a playoff spot after a very inconsistent play at the beginning of the season.”

The Santa Paula JV defeated Grace Brethren by a score of 62 to 31. The Cardinals finished their season with a record of 16-4, and a league record of 8-2. The Cards jumped out to a 19 to 9 score after the first quarter in route to a 31 pointing spearing of the Lancers. 

JV Coach Justin Schmidt said, “I am very proud of the progression that the young men made over the course of the season.  If they continue to find ways to improve their game, then they will be very successful at the varsity level.”

Mariah Dominguez, Vivian Hernandez, and Mercedes Montoya sang the National Anthem before the largest home crowd of the season.
