The Lady Cardinal soccer team fought their way to a 3-2 win over La Salle High School from Pasadena.
It was a battle from the beginning with neither side giving ground. Santa Paula scored first off the foot of Jennifer Magana in the first half. She hit the goal again before the half ended. The Lancers matched the two goals and the game was tied at the half 2-2. Santa Paula’s top scorer for the year, Taylor Alvarado, was injured late in the first half with about six minutes to play. She was tended to on the sidelines and returned in the second half.
Alvarado scored the winning goal with an assist from Mariela Cisneros. Freshman goal keeper Angie Ayala made five saves in the game.
Coach Jesus (Chuy) Cordova noted they had a 2-0 lead in the first half, “The 2-0 score is the most dangerous score in soccer.” He added that he hopes the girls continue to play at the same intensity at the next game. “I think we’ll be fine,” he said. “It’s just a matter of playing together and scoring goals.”
