By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesJust what to do with parked trucks is an issue that just keeps on truckin’ after the City Council agreed that the issue needs even more study.Public Works Director/City Engineer Cliff Finley studied how to handle the trucks over 7-feet high that have been parking on South Hallock Drive after the council discussed the issue in February.Councilmembers were concerned that a parking ban could move the problem to other locations in the city and asked if signage targeting truck parking restrictions could be posted at all city entrances.
There are 11 entrances to the city, said Finley, and signage is not recommended as it might require a trucker to pull over to study the sign and any restriction updates would require new signs, among other issues.Councilman Rick Cook said the damage to the streets done by heavy trucks is a concern as well as how the parked vehicles appear: “There’s a trailer dumped on Harvard Boulevard that’s been there for three months. Most of the trucks damaging the streets are not owned by people in town.”Sign pollution is also a concern, Cook added, but “if we don’t take the initiative, the motto Keep Santa Paula Beautiful is just a façade. . .the buildings might be pretty but the streets,” are deteriorating.
