‘Impressions of Santa Paula’: SPSA hosts exhibit of photos at BCL

River valley residents as well as lovers of fine photography will surely want to see “Impressions of Santa Paula” a special exhibit of area scenes by Moorpark College students.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesRiver valley residents as well as lovers of fine photography will surely want to see “Impressions of Santa Paula” a special exhibit of area scenes by Moorpark College students.Sponsored by the Santa Paula Society of the Arts, “Santa Paula Impressions” will debut Saturday, Nov. 1st at Blanchard Community Library.According to Virginia Gunderson of the SPSA, the exhibit will run through Dec. 13th at the library, located at 119 N. 8th St.“Cyber Summer” workshop students photographed the array of images during an August discovery tour of Santa Paula.Founded in 1997, “Cyber Summer” is an annual workshop organized by the college’s Media Arts Institute. The workshop is open to anyone, from high school students to professionals in the field.John Grzywacz-Gray and guests lead this five-day workshop.Gunderson said the SPSA got involved in the project when a workshop participant visited the library after hearing that the arts society has permanent exhibit space used for rotating displays.“Library staff gave Amani Fliers my number; she was looking for a large enough place to exhibit the works and since it was all of Santa Paula,” the logical decision was made to have the exhibit at BCL.
Gunderson said that the exhibit promises to be well worth a visit, and “I may join them on a photo shoot next year!”The photographs consist of both traditional photography as well as digital photography, printed using a variety of traditional and high-tech equipment in color and black and white.“This will be the first showing of this collection in the county and at this time there over 45 pieces depicting scenes of interest to all. From local homes, people living life, murals to trees and our historic Depot,” noted Gunderson. “A visit to our busy library will be worth your while.”“Impressions of Santa Paula” includes photographs by Ben Dent, Amani Fliers, John Grzywacz-Gray, Nancy Haberman, Kathy LaForce, Marie Payette, Kim Ramseyer, Brenda Russett, Bob Silberman, Sueann Valentine and Janet Wall.Subjects range from the city’s famous murals, an area playground, Familia Diaz, BCL, shots of local residents and business people, the Morton Bay Fig, The Mill, the areas famous trees and flowers, and architecture.Price for an 11x14 matted print is $60 framed, 16x20 matted print is $75 framed, and 25 percent of all sales will go to the SPSA.Interested buyers can contact the artists through the SPSA, 525-1104, or email amaniflirs@aol.com.
