Alan James Peterson
Alan James Peterson, M.D., family physician, Korean War veteran, and 40-year resident of Santa Paula passed away on October 31, 2003 of complications of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).He was born to Grace and Eugene Peterson in Wheatland, Wyoming on February 8, 1932, the second eldest of their four sons. The family moved from Lingle, Wyoming in 1935 to settle in Venice, California.Dr. Peterson graduated from Venice High School in 1949. After serving on the naval aircraft carrier USS Oriskany during the Korean War, he married Gloria Mahla of El Segundo. They had four children together while Dr. Peterson completed his studies at Loyola University of Los Angeles, and Saint Louis University Medical School, where he earned top honors and graduated at the head of his class as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Society. He completed his residency in family practice as the chief resident at Ventura County General Hospital before establishing his practice in Santa Paula in 1963.Over the years Dr. Peterson earned his MBA at Pepperdine University and served as a member and president of the Santa Paula Union High School Board of Trustees, the Santa Paula Memorial Hospital Medical Board, and the Ventura County Medical Society.He made the most of every day as an avid reader, runner, pilot, farmer, golfer, and motorcycle and bicycling enthusiast. What he enjoyed most was the company of his family, friends, co-workers, and the patients he treated.Dr. Peterson is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his children, John (wife Lisa), Jane (husband Bob Frank), Linda (husband Steve Obradovich), and Charlie (wife Jenifer), and brothers Phil and Roger. He also leaves 13 grandchildren: Jill Peterson, Amanda Peterson, John Frank, Katie Frank, Charlie Frank, Will Frank, Paige Obradovich, Piper Obradovich, Prestin Obradovich, Pete Obradovich, Patrick Peterson, Alexandra Peterson, and Jack Peterson, and is also survived by Barbara’s children Mitchell Fox (wife Peggy), Russell Fox (wife Alissa), and Janice Robinson (husband Keith), and grandchildren Hailey Fox, Spencer Fox, Cameron Robinson and Stephanie Robinson.Dr. Peterson was preceded in death by the mother of his children, both his parents, and his older brother John.He was a doctor’s doctor who helped mentor and establish many of the county’s most prominent physicians, while proudly referring to himself as a “country doctor.”Graveside services were held November 4 at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery. There will be a celebration of Dr. Peterson’s life at Saticoy Country Club between 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 8. Hattie Lea Fisher MacdonaldHattie Lea Fisher Macdonald, 77, of Santa Paula, died on October 31, 2003.Lea was born February 2, 1926 in Akron, Colorado, the only child of Raymond and Lena Fisher. She moved to California in 1940, where she met and married Donald Macdonald in 1945. Lea was a member of Job’s Daughters Bethel #6 of Long Beach, Santa Barbara Marguerite Chapter of Eastern Star, Nu Phi Delta Chi Sorority, and La Buena RV Club.Lea and Don lived happily with their family in Santa Barbara for 40 years, moving to Santa Paula in 1986 due to Don’s poor health. Camping was a favorite activity of Lea’s, seeing a great deal of God’s beauty in the great out of doors.Lea is survived by her children, Maggi Daane of Santa Maria, Mike Macdonald (Tina) of Yreka, Martin Macdonald (Cheryl) of Sacramento, and Marsha Macdonald (John O’Brien) of Santa Barbara. Her three granddaughters also survive her: Meggan McNichols, and Melissa and Heather Macdonald, as well as the latest addition to her family, her great granddaughter Izobella Lea, born October 11, 2003. Lea was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Don Macdonald.Lea was blessed all her life with loving family members and numerous friends from her various activities. The family would like to thank their numerous friends for their caring support, prayers, and love during her lifetime.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice, or the charity of your choice.A memorial service will be held in Lea’s honor at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Paula, 121 Davis Street, at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 8.
