Jesus R. Echavarria Jesus R. Echavarria, 84, of Santa Paula, went home to be with the Lord on May 13, 2004 with his wife and children and loved ones by his side. Jesus was born on January 6, 1920 in Lordsburg, New Mexico and was a 69-year resident of Santa Paula.Jesus was proud to serve his country as a member of the U.S. Army as a Technical Sergeant, Company B, 135th Infantry Regiment during World War II. He received the Purple Heart, Presidential Citation, and numerous other medals. The turning point in Jesus’ life took place on January 5, 1944 during an intense battle in Vittorio, Italy. His platoon was being heavily fired upon and he said to God, “If you get me out of here I will be your servant.” Both men on either side of him were killed, but Jesus’ life was spared. After returning to the States in 1945 he was employed at Port Hueneme Naval Base as a plumber until his retirement in 1982.Jesus was an active member of El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School and was a member of the United Methodist Men. He also took pride in being a Boy Scout leader, was involved with the local Rescue Mission and Jail Ministry, and was a member of VFW/DAV. Throughout his working life he enjoyed doing plumbing for friends and acquaintances. He lived his life with character and was a role model for his entire family.He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ascension (Chonita); four children, Jess Echavarria Jr., Inez (husband George) Burnham, Rose (husband Rick) Bestle, and Ron (wife Rosa) Echavarria; nine grandchildren, Noah Echavarria, Tirzo and Clay Little Turtle, Dylan and Morgan Burnham, Marie and Sarah Bestle, and Justin and Janae Echavarria; and three great grandchildren, Dustin and Corina Little Turtle and Sammy Burnham. He is also survived by his brother Sabino Echavarria and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.Our family appreciates the many years of care provided by Dr. Gary Deutsch. Our gratitude is also given to Dr. Michael Swartout for his tireless effort throughout the last few months, and to Twin Pines Health Care for their kindness and concern extended to our father and the entire family.Visitation was scheduled from 2 to 8 p.m. May 18 at Pierce Brothers Stetler Mortuary, 128 S. 8th St., Santa Paula. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 19 at El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church, 1029 E. Santa Paula St., Santa Paula. Burial to follow immediately at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery.
