By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe nomination period for elected offices will kick off on July 12 and end on August 6 for an array of offices throughout the Santa Paula area. The Santa Paula City Council has two members whose terms are up: John Procter has announced he will seek a second term but Ray Luna has yet to announce whether or not he will also seek a second term. Also up for election are the seats of City Clerk Steven Salas and City Treasurer Sandy Easley.Santa Paula Union High School has two seats opening, as does Briggs School District. Mupu School District also will have an opening as one member is termed out.Santa Clara School District – AKA Little Red Schoolhouse – has a seat opening up and the Santa Paula Elementary School District has two seats that will be termed out.
Blanchard Community Library has three seats that will be up for election and possibly four after the announcement that Dr. Dora Crouch will be retiring from the board effective December.Crouch has asked that Librarian Dan Robles research whether or not she would have to vacate her seat before the end of the election-filing period to allow a candidate to run.In any race if the incumbent does not run the seat is open for nomination filing an additional five days, which is Aug. 11.The November General Election will be held on November 2 but if you’re not registered you won’t be able to vote. Registration deadline is October 18 and is open to any citizen who will be 18 years of age by or on November 2.If you have moved you must reregistered. If you have not voted in years – and shame on you if you haven’t! – it’s not a bad idea to check with the Ventura County Register’s Office to ensure that you’re still on the registration rolls and able to vote in the November election.Voters are being encouraged to cast absentee ballots – it saves the county money - and to considering volunteering to work the polls on Election Day.
