Boy in bike accident undergoes fourth surgery

The 13-year-old boy who lost control of his bicycle and received critical injuries on Friday has shown signs of improvement but was poised to undergo another surgery at a Newhall hospital.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe 13-year-old boy who lost control of his bicycle and received critical injuries on Friday has shown signs of improvement but was poised to undergo another surgery at a Newhall hospital.The unidentified boy lost control of his bicycle while riding down a steep hillside above Santa Paula Union High School Friday evening, according to a Santa Paula Police spokesman.The unidentified boy was not wearing a helmet as he rode his bicycle southbound in the 500 block of 6th Street near View Drive at about 9:30 p.m., on Oct. 1, according to SPPD Sgt. Gary Marshall.The boy lost control of the bicycle on the steep downhill grade, struck a curb and was ejected from the bike. The boy flew off the bike and crashed into a cinder-block wall.He was flown by helicopter to Henry Mayo Hospital in Newhall.
The boy received a fractured skull, broken wrist and a ruptured kidney in the accident. He underwent his fourth surgery on Thursday and his condition is listed as critical but stable.According to a family member who asked not to be identified the boy has had periods of consciousness. The boy’s mother has been staying at the hospital.It is anticipated that the boy, a Santa Paula Union High School freshman, will be transferred to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles in the near future.
