The Santa Paula High Lady Cardinals hosted their annual varsity tournament last week and took fourth place in some tough competition.
Pacifica High School won first place with a 4-0 record over the four-day tourney. Nipomo won second and Fillmore got third place after defeating Santa Paula Saturday night. The Lady Cards met up first with Nipomo of Santa Maria, losing the game 48-29. Lady Cardinal Leah Kolbeck did her best to keep the Cards in the game by scoring 20 points. The following night, Santa Paula came back with a 53-41 win over Grace Brethren. Kolbeck and Nicole Sliger led the way for the Cards.
Santa Paula won on a forfeit Friday. Saturday was the playoff for third place between the Lady Cards and the Lady Flashes. With Kolbeck and Ashley Nichols absent Fillmore was too much for the Lady Cardinals to handle. Using a quick defense Fillmore was able to take advantage of Santa Paula’s lack of experience. Santa Paula played most of the game with three freshmen, a junior and a sophomore. “Even with the lack of experience they made up for it in heart and played as physical as a team could,” said Coach Jess Martinez. “They never gave up, but in the end it was a sound Fillmore team that won third place.”
