The Housing Rights Center, in collaboration with the City of Santa Paula, will be hosting a Housing Rights Workshop to discuss housing rights: fair housing laws, protected classes, unlawful discrimination practices, including landlord-tenant rights and responsibilities.Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, known as the “Fair Housing Act,” provides protection from discrimination in all housing related transactions based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status and disability. Furthermore, in California the Fair Employment and Housing Act provides additional protections against housing discrimination based on marital status, ancestry, sexual orientation, and source of income. The California Unruh Civil Rights Act also protects from housing discrimination based on age and protects the right to freedom from violence and intimidation in housing. The Housing Rights Workshop will bring together Santa Paula and surrounding communities with the purpose of informing and educating community members on fair housing laws, what is unlawful under fair housing laws, and how to prevent housing discrimination. Other topics shall include tenant-landlord rights and responsibilities, rent increases, evictions, notices and more. The workshop will also provide the opportunity to present the Housing Rights Center, its program and services to the community.
