Santa Paula TimesThe Santa Paula Memorial Hospital Auxiliary celebrated dedicated workers and those dedicated to working professionally in the health field at its annual luncheon where ?Hour Bars? as well as scholarships were presented.Scholarships - helped with matching grants from Beta Health Group Insurance - are named in honor of those who were dedicated to the ?Hospital on the Hill,? noted Auxiliary 2nd Vice President and Scholarship Committee Chairwoman Jean Dempsey. She and Co-Chairwoman Eloise Eakins had seven excellent applicants, Dempsey noted. Dempsey thanked those who continue to raise the funds - including cookie bakers - to continue the program the scholarships program.The James W. Knight Memorial Scholarship went to Rebecca Jensen, a Ventura College Nursing Program student. Jensen is registered on the National Bone Marrow Registry and has donated platelets through United Blood Services, noted Dempsey. Jensen, the mother of a young son, is also an active volunteer, and ?One of her main interests is preventative medicine, she wants to educate people on how to prevent getting sick.?The recipient of the Grace Thille Scholarship was Christy Monteith, enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program at California State University Sacramento. Monteith is aiming for a Master?s Degree in Nursing and becoming a Nurse Practitioner. ?She?s a delightful young lady with lots of energy and dedication to the nursing field,? Dempsey noted.The recipient of the Velma Mayhew Scholarship was Heliodora Hurtado, whose interest in the health field stemmed from taking care of his disabled father. Currently enrolled in the Ventura College Nursing Program, Hurtado is a ?hardworking young man,? who has two part-time jobs, including as assistant manager of a Ventura restaurant. In spite of his 30-hour work week he still maintains a 3.5 GPA, said Dempsey. Hurtado is also helping his younger sister to get through high school. After he becomes an RN, he plans on becoming a Nurse Practitioner.
A highlight of the Auxiliary event was the awarding of the ?Hour Bars? denoting individual cumulative volunteer hours.Lucille Morgan, Chairwoman of Volunteer Scheduling/Hours, said volunteers last year contributed an astonishing 7,373 hours including floor duty, working at the Pink Parasol Gift Shop, sewing, front desk and efforts by Junior Volunteers.Those volunteers who received ?Hour Bars? were: 100 Hours, Jody Caudillo and Nancy Castro; 200 Hours, Rosalie Easton and Jody Caudillo; 500 Hours, Clara Behrens, Angie Marshall, Millie Korth and Donna Zaelke; 700 Hours, Annette Subic and JoAnn Runnels; 1000 Hours, Edith Smith and Maxine Spracklen; 1200 Hours, Eloise Eakins, Jean Dempsey and Cuma Lonon; 1500 Hours, Shirley Wirls; 3500 Hours, Carolyn Lasky; 4500 Hours, La Wanda Campbell and Lucille Morgan. Receiving 5000 Hour Bars were Martha Knight and Jane Wigley.
